The Income Standard / Origin note
Retirement income needed its own standard.
The subject needed a platform larger than a service page and more focused than a general financial brand.
Retirement advice often treats income as the final paragraph of an accumulation story. Build the portfolio, estimate a withdrawal rate and assume the rest can be managed later.
After years of client conversations, that framing no longer fit the problem. The distribution phase had its own architecture: income floors, withdrawal order, sequence risk, required distributions, taxes, longevity and the surviving-spouse scenario.
The idea needed separation.
Long Financial Services could deliver the work, but an operating firm and an educational platform have different jobs. The Income Standard gave the framework a name, a voice and room to become a podcast, a book, planning tools and a growing body of explanation.
A named standard can be taught, tested and improved. An unnamed approach stays trapped inside individual conversations.
The launch also clarified the rest of the ecosystem. LFS remained the independent agency. Tempered Wealth became a focused planning expression. The Income Standard became the public authority layer—the place where retirement income is the main subject rather than an adjacent service.
That separation is now central to the SEO strategy across Tod’s public properties. The goal is not merely for people to find Tod Long. It is for search engines and readers to understand the relationship: Tod Long, founder, author and host; The Income Standard; retirement income.
